Website Care Plans: What They Cover and Do You Need One?

Most small business websites are built, launched and then left alone. That works for a while. Then a plugin stops working, the site slows down, a contact form quietly stops sending, or worse, the site gets hacked. A website care plan is how you stop that happening.

This guide explains what a website care plan covers, whether you need one, what you can safely do yourself, and how pricing works.

What is a website care plan?

A website care plan (also called a maintenance plan) is an ongoing service where someone looks after the technical side of your website every month. Most UK small business websites run on WordPress, which is updated regularly, along with its themes and plugins. Those updates fix bugs and close security holes, but they need doing carefully, and they need checking afterwards.

Think of it like servicing a van. You can skip it for a while, but the longer you leave it, the bigger and more expensive the problem when something finally goes wrong.

What a good care plan includes

TaskWhy it matters
WordPress, theme and plugin updatesOut-of-date software is the most common way small business sites get hacked
Daily backupsIf anything goes wrong, your site can be restored instead of rebuilt
Security monitoringProblems are spotted early, before customers or Google notice
Uptime monitoringYou find out the site is down from us, not from a customer
Bug fixesBroken forms, layouts or links get sorted without you chasing anyone
Speed checksSlow sites lose visitors and rank lower on Google
Small content changesNew prices, photos, staff or opening hours updated for you (on plans that include it)

Do you need a website care plan?

You probably do if:

  • Your website brings in enquiries, bookings or sales, so downtime costs you money.
  • You run an online shop, where updates and security matter even more.
  • Nobody in the business is comfortable updating WordPress or fixing things when they break.
  • Your site hasn’t been updated in months and you’re not sure what state it’s in.

You may not need one if your site is a simple page on a website builder like Wix or Squarespace, where the platform handles updates for you, or if you’re confident doing updates, testing and backups yourself every month.

What you can do yourself

If you’d rather look after your own site, these are the basics:

  1. Back up before every update. Use a backup plugin or your hosting’s backup tool, and check you can actually restore from it.
  2. Update regularly. Little and often is safer than a big batch of updates every six months.
  3. Test after updating. Check your homepage, contact form, checkout and any booking system still work.
  4. Delete what you don’t use. Unused plugins and themes are a security risk even when switched off.
  5. Use strong passwords and two-factor login for every admin account.

The catch is time. Done properly, it’s a regular job, and when an update does break something, fixing it needs technical know-how.

How much does a website care plan cost?

It depends on the site. A five-page brochure site with a handful of plugins needs far less looking after than an online shop with hundreds of products, a booking system and several integrations. That’s why we don’t publish a one-size-fits-all price.

Instead, we look at your website first: how many pages it has, which plugins it uses, how complicated the setup is, and how much help you want with content changes. Then we give you a fixed monthly quote. Our plans come in three levels:

  • Basic: backups, updates, monitoring and bug fixes.
  • Professional: everything in Basic, plus content changes and new pages done for you.
  • Ecommerce: everything an online shop needs, including ecommerce support.

When comparing quotes elsewhere, check what’s actually included. A cheap plan that only runs automatic updates, with no testing or fixes, can cost more in the long run.

Website care plan or web hosting?

They’re different things. Hosting is where your website lives: the server that keeps it online. A care plan is the ongoing work of keeping the website itself updated, secure and working. Good hosting helps, but it won’t update your plugins or fix a broken form. Many businesses have both with the same company, so there’s one place to call when something goes wrong. See our web hosting and our guide to moving your website to a new host.
