How Branding Can Make or Break Your Business

Businesses are established with the end goal of getting revenues. This is a long shot and as you grow your business day by day, branding plays a vital role. Think of branding as the invisible thread that ties your product, brand story, and company vision. Through branding, you are creating a representation of your company. You want people to remember your brand when they read certain taglines, see specific colors, and products.

With branding, you make your business identifiable. It gives an identity to your brand that separates you from the competitors.

Before starting branding for your business, here are some things to consider that can either make or break your business.

Insensitivity

To make our brand known to the public, we try to come up with an interesting ad. There are ads that are being talked about either because they have captured the heart of everyone or because it’s full of controversies.

In 2017, Pepsi released a commercial that includes Kendall Jenner. In the commercial, Kendall was having a photoshoot and later on joined a protest. She then handed one of the cops a can of Pepsi. The ad received outrage on social media saying it was an insensitive approach to what people are fighting for. It was taken down in less than 48 hours after the initial release. Although it made Pepsi trend online, it has a negative effect on the brand with many people wanting to boycott and stay away from the brand.

Failure to adapt to change

The needs and wants of the consumers change with time and brands should be able to keep up with these changes.

Before Apple and Samsung came into existence, Nokia was the king of mobile brands. It was so popular in early 2000 and was releasing new phone models one after the other. Symbian smartphones were introduced in 2002 which Nokia was able to successfully market. They continued to produce the same old models until more brands introduced newer and better mobile technology.

In 2007, the first-ever iPhone came out and this is the start of Nokia’s downfall. Clearly, Nokia failed because it refused to adapt to the changes.

Poor design

Your business website plays an important role in branding as it serves as your brand’s online store. If your website doesn’t look appealing enough, people will ignore it. First impression lasts and one of the first things that customers will check is your online representation. No matter how good or effective your products are or how good your customer service is, most people will not pay attention to a website that is not great looking. Work towards having a professional-looking website that is good to look at and easy to navigate and see for yourself how it can attract customers.

Underestimating the power of social media

With so many social media platforms available, business owners may find it difficult to maintain their online presence. But if you want to make a good impression and make your brand stand out, you need to start building your social media presence. Invest time and effort to post relevant and interesting content for your social media accounts. Customers also associate the number of followers with credibility. So if you only have less than 10 followers, it’s time to work on your social media strategies to grow your audience.

Unsatisfied customers

Generally speaking, people are more vocal when they have a bad experience and tend to keep it to themselves when they experience something great. If your customer is not satisfied with your products or customer services, it’s easy for them to leave a negative review or worse, spread it on social media. It’s rare for satisfied customers to give a business a call for a commendation or leave a great review online. This is the reason why customer experience should sit on top of your priority. As the old saying goes “ The customer is always right”. And even if you feel that they are not right, remember that they are your customers that’s why you need to treat them right.
